Description

The Gorges du Trient is an impressive narrow gorge, a left side branch of the wide Rhone valley near Vernayaz. It is most easily reached on the road from nearby La Bâtiaz uphill to Salvan and Les Granges. The road runs uphill along the valley side and crosses the gorge of Trient on the Pont de Gueuroz. This huge reinforced concrete bridge has a length of 168 m and a height of 187 m. The bridge was built between 1932 and 1934, and until the completion of the Europabrücke of the Brennerautobahn in Austria in 1963, it was the highest road bridge of the World. There is a parking lot and an outlook down into the gorge. The bridge is a footbridge today or may be used by bicycle.

To see the gorge itself, some more walking is required. Starting at Vernayaz, at the Nationalstraße 21, a trail was built along the vertical cliff face through the gorge. It has signs explaining the history and the geology of the area.

The spring of the Trient torrent is the Trientgletscher (trient glacier) above the village Trient. Along its course between Finhaut and Vernayaz four sections of the gorge are developed with trails.
