Description

The Dolinenweg Hengen (doline trail Hengen) is a 8 km long hiking trail, which leads to several interesting karst features. The main topic are, of course, the six dolines along the path, which are protected by law. Beneath their geological interest, they are important biotopes in the waterless karst landscape.

Of special interest are the wo Au-Löcher. One of them contains a well that flows all the year. It is a result of the water resistant volcanic tufa from the Hengen volcano. The water forms a brook, which enters the karst nearby in the second doline flowing into a sinkhole.

The sights of the trail are described on eight big signs. The rail with he signs was created in 2001 and was the first educaional rail in Germany dedicated to dolines. Saring point is a small parking lot for hikers a the sports area of the samll village Hengen. The trails was well marked with small signs but unfortunately those have no been maintains in the last years. As a result the tourist office of Bad Urach does not publish the trail any more. But the trail is still there and the dolines and the explanatory plates still exist. We recommend the Google path below or a good topographic map.
