Description

About 100 m North of the Lippold Cave is the Lügenstein (Lying Stone). This is a block of stone weighing about two tonnes which is stuck in a crevice in the rock. According to legend, the stone starts to slide when someone who has lied passes under it, hence the name. It is also said that there used to be a Medieval court here.

The forested ridge between Duingen and Brunkensen, like the neighbouring ridges, represents an escarpment. The rock layers are inclined by about 10° and the hard limestones are eroded more slowly and form these ridges. The inclination of the strata is due to tectonic uplift, which has also caused the rocks to fracture, forming vertical cracks. The incision of the Glenetal, which cuts through this ridge, has eroded the rock downslope. This has resulted in a unilateral release of pressure. The rock therefore tilts downslope and a cleft opens. If the upper end tilts outwards, there is a crevasse, if it tilts inwards, a fracture cave is formed. However, it is rare for a boulder to fall into the crevice at some point and get stuck there. Also, the block which tilted is very thin and looks more like a plate than a block. So this is a really unusual geotope.
