History

Description

The Grotte di Rescia are rare tufa caves, primary caves which were formed during the deposition of limestone from a limestone-rich spring. They are located at the shores of the Lake of Lugano, on the Italian side. Here a gorge brings water into the lake, the brook forms waterfalls and is very limestone rich, as it originates from a karst spring uphills. The cascata di S.Giulia is also worth a visit.

Rescia is a small village which belongs to Osteno. This side of the lake is rather steep, and there is no land for building a town, except at this place. The debris from the gorge forms a fan of sediments, creating a semicircular platform, protruding into the lake.
