History

1952 discovered by a hunter during winter./td>
19-JUL-1952 designated a Historic Site by the prefecture.

Description

船久保洞窟 or 船久保鍾乳洞 (Funakubo shōnyūdō, Funakubo Cave) was discovered by a hunter in winter 1952. The archaeological importance of the site was obvious, so the cave was declared a Historic Site in the same year. In the entrance chamber with an area of 50 m² earthenware from the late Jomon period (2,500 to 3,000 BP) was excavated. The cave also has nice speleothems, mostly stalactites and stalagmites.

The cave is managed by Mr. Matsuzaka, who also guides the visitors. As the cave is not one of the popular tourist caves, most of the year he will only be on site after appointment. We strongly recommend making a phone call first. The cave is open in winter, but due to snow access might be impossible.

The cave is not really a show cave, there are trails which were made by the archaeologists. Visitors are equipped with helmets, headlamp, and boots.
