History

Description

Matevulu Blue Hole is the largest of the numerous Santo bathing ponds. It is located opposite Oyster Island Resort. The place is best reached by paddling up the crystal river, which takes about 30 minutes. But its also possible to direct to the blue hole, the way is signposted from the highway. It has some infrastructure like a cafe, and offers a giant rope swing tied onto a large banyan tree.

The Blue Holes of Vanuatu are named such, because they are almost circular ponds with the typical blue colour caused by the high limestone content of the water. Nevertheless, the karstological term is actually reserved for submarine dolines, so this is simply a karst spring, and blue hole is the proper name.
