Västerbotten Län

Västerbotten Län is an industrial region of Sweden, based on mining activities. The mining started in Boliden, in the northern part of the province during the 1920s. Boliden is today an international mining company.

Today the industry of the area is based on rich iron ore deposits. Many iron mines are already exhausted and have been converted into tourist mines. The ores are connected with a very rich and complex mineralization, and so the area is famous about mineralogists and mineral collectors. There are numerous old mines where more than 300 different minerals have been found. The most famous is probably Vildmarksgruva (wilderness mine) at Varuträsk.
