Description

The Eagle Mining Co. is the site of a 1870s gold mining operation, with underground mine tour, historic buildings and mining machinery and gear on display. The grandparents of the current owner bought the property in the 1960s and restored the mines. Eagle and High Peak Mine is a combination of two formerly separate mines, the Eagle Mine and the High Peak Mine. They were united after World War I. Together they extend 330 m into the mountain, with eleven levels and on a vertical distance of 160 m.

The mine tour shows two levels of the mine. A horizontal tunnel, about 330 m long has hand tools used to dig out the gold ore, an air driven, water cooled rock drill, and chutes to carry the ore to the ore carts on display. The wooden trusses which braced the tunnels are explained. The tour is completed by the hoist room machinery which carried miners down into the mine and back, standing at the head of an 160 m deep shaft. Huge stamps outside the mine were used to crush the ore to extract the gold.
