Southern Thuringia is very similar to the Thüringer Becken. But the volcanism of the nearby Rhön (Vogelsberg volcano) produced a number of basaltic mountains, which make the typical character of this area.
This area is also called Henneberger Land. It is around 300 m asl, but some mountains have 700 m asl. This is a little bit lower than the nearby Thüringer Wald and the Rhön on the other side.
