The country Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in southeast Europe, it has borders with Croatia (232km), Serbia (312km) and Montenegro (215km). Its size is 51,129km2 and its population 3.8 million people (pre-war 4.3 million people). The Capital is Sarajevo with a population of 400,000. Other major cities are Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica, Mostar, and Bihac.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the Dinarides or Dinarian Alps, a mountain range running parallel to the Mediterranean coast from northwest to southeast. The Dinarian Alps are a little lower than the Alps, but still impressive. The highest point is the summit of Maglic Mountain, 2,386m asl. The more southern location results in a higher vegetation zone. The mountains are almost completely composed of limestone and heavily karstified. Numerous deep caves and shafts are known. And of course there are impressive gorges, three of them exceptionally deep, the canyon of the Tara River is the deepest gorge of Europe. The area is popular with hikers, climbers, mountaineers and whitewater rafters as well.
The country is still in the aftermath of the Balkan War, there are still areas with landmines. On the other side, since 2007 it participates in the Stabilisation and Association Process (SAP) with the goal to become a member of the European Union.
