内蒙古自治区 (Nèi Měnggǔ Zìzhìqū) or simply Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region of China along the northern border to Mongolia. With 12 % of Chinas land area and 1.8 % of Chinas population it is among the low density provinces.
Inner Mongolia covers the northern side of the North China Craton, a tilted and sedimented Precambrian block. It borders the Tibetan Plateau in the southwest where the Helan Mountains have the highest mountain named Main Peak (3,556 m asl). The plateau of Inner Mongolia is in average 1,200 m asl and covered by massive loess and sand deposits. The Khingan Mountains in the northern or northeastern part are of Mesozoic age. There are steppes and forest, in the northern parts permafrost can be found. The west is arid. Inner Mongolia is a center of mining as the craton has numerous resources. There are large reserves of coal, iron ore and rare-earth minerals.
We have only one site listed, which is a cave in granite and primarily an archaeological site. The whole province is not suitable for karst, there are very few caves. There is loess, so yaodongs are easily built, but as far as we know there are no sites open to the public. This is probably a result of the fact that this area is not visited by many tourists, the whole province is off the beaten track.
