Gran Canaria is the biggest island of the Canarias. Its capital is Las Palmas in the north-western corner, built on a land bridge to a peninsula. The harbour of the city is on the western side of the peninsula, the eastern side provides a nice beach right in the middle of the city. In the center of Las Palmas is the Museo Canario, the most comprehensive exhibition about the Canarian Islands and the Guanches.
The whole island has a nearly circular shape, with coastal plains to the south and east, and cliffs to the west and north. The center is covered by volcanoes and deep ravines.
