Thessaly is the area north of Athens, a mountainous region with the most famous mountain of Greece, the Mount Olymp. Huge parts of this area are covered by limestone, but there are also many other rocks. So this area is famous for many resources, which were exploited since prehistoric times. Even today there are many open casts and mines.
Nevertheless, this area offers important karst areas with numerous caves. But, unfortunate for the traveller, none is open to the public. There are no show caves which may be visited. As far as we know there is not even a mine or artificial subterranea which may be visited. We listed Theopetra Cave, because it is an important archaeological site, but it is not open for visitors. Only the Documentation and Education Center is open for visitors.
