Limestone areas are found throughout Mexico, alternating with volcanic and metamorphic rocks, and flat plains. From the Sierra Madre Oriental, which begins in the north in Tamaulipas to the southern karsts of Yucatan or Chiapas, and from sea level to the high mountains, one finds major caves in nine of the 31 states which make up this large country.
Mexico is noted for its deep caves like
Sotano de las Golondrinas
and for its large caves passages as in
Grutas de Cacahuamilpa.
