Krasnodar Krai is located in the southwestern part of the North Caucasus. The Republic of Adygea is completely encircled by the krai territory. The mountains are partly made of limestone which is karstified. Several caves are important archaeological site, for example Мезмайская пещера (Mezmaiskaya Cave). However, the famous 2 km deep caves are located in the neighbouring country Georgia.
The krai has a coast to the Black Sean and to the Sea of Azov. It also has a land bridge to the Crimea with bridges over the Strait of Kerch. The eastern and northen part of the kraj are plains without underground sights.
