Amazonas

The Amazonas state is obviously located at the Amazon river, the huge state is the northwestern corner of Brazil. It is also located at the equator, and in the tropical rainforest climate zone, the state is covered by rainforest. Most of the state is lowland, and due to the heavy erosion by much rain and high temperatures, the land is covered by a thick layer of residuals, aka clay. The geology is not suitable for caves, but there are a few sandstone hills and actually two small caves open to the public.

The most spectacular caves of the state are located in the quartzite tepuis at the border to Venezuela in the north. As far as we know, no caves are open to the public. The Abismo Guy Collet (SP-090) is the deepest cave in Brazil, in South America, and the deepest quartzite cave in the world. It is 671 m deep and for obvious reasons not open to the public.
