Limestone Distribution of Britain

The big limestone areas of Britain are easy to see on this map. Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Permian limestones produce stripes with a curve across England. Carboniferous limestones are very common in northern England and southern Scotland and in parts of Wales.

Beneath those big areas are several small limestone areas, which are from north to south:

• Cambro-Ordivician Durness Carbonates of Assynt. They are found in a small stripe parallel to the northwest coast of scottland.
• Late Precambrian (Dalradian) limestones. This limestone is metamorphosed (marble). There are small areas all over the central Highlands.
• Silurian limestone at the eastern border of Wales.
• Devonian limestone of the British Riviera around Torquay.
