Gwynedd is located in the north-west of Wales. The majority of the population is Welsh-speaking. The economy is based on tourism, many visitors are attracted by the many beaches and the mountains. The Snowdonia National Park, which extends from the north coast down to the district of Meirionnydd in the south, is a significant part of the county. The most important traditional industry is the slate industry, but only a small number of people earn their living today with slate.
