Merseyside

Merseyside is a ceremonial and metropolitan county in North West England. It is more or less the city of Liverpool, but also some suburbs, around the Mersey Estuary. Liverpool was a major port, heavily involved in the Atlantic slave trade and in supplying cotton to the mills of Lancashire. Birkenhead was a centre for shipbuilding. The name Mersey is internationally known from the Merseybeat of the 1960s, which was made popular by the Beatles. The geology is not suitable for natural caves, but as a city it has numerous subterranea and some are open to the public.
