The Queensway Mersey Tunnel is also known under the abbreviations Queensway Tunnel or Mersey Tunnel. It connects the two parts of the city Liverpool beneath the River Mersey, Liverpool center on the eastern side and Queensway on the western side. The road is the A41, which is dual lane. There is also the Kingsway Tunnel to the north, which is a double tunnel with two lanes in each direction, for the A59. However, only the Queensway Mersey Tunnel offers the Mersey Tunnel Tours. Starting at George's Dock Building, the tour will explain how the tunnel was constructed, will show the giant ventilation fans, show the original tunnel control room, which is not in use any more, and even show the tunnel which is still in use. This seems a little weird, as anyone can actually drive through the tunnel, but on the tour its possible to watch the traffic in the tunnel. The guides even list the Hollywood movies which were filmed in the tunnel.
The tour through the tunnel requires a lot of walking and many steps, so it is not suitable for elderly, people with mobility, breathing and sight difficulties or disabled. Please be at George's Dock Building 15 minutes before tour starts. Booking is strongly recommended, but if there are places available you may join the tour without.
