Περιφέρεια Αττικής

Attica

Περιφέρεια Αττικής (Periféria Attikís, Attica) is an administrative region of Greece. It includes the entire metropolitan area of Athens, the country's capital and largest city. It is bigger than the historical region of Attica.

Athens is actually located only around 70 m asl, but it has numerous hills, which are up to 340 m asl. Think about the Akropolis, such hills are always popular for building walled cities or temples. The central plain of Attica is often referred to as Λεκανοπέδιο Αθηνών/Αττικής (Athens Basin, Attica Basin). This is where the city is located. It is surrounded by four large mountains: Mount Aigaleo to the west, Mount Parnitha (1,413 m asl) to the north, Mount Pentelicus to the northeast and Mount Hymettus to the east. Mount Parnitha has been declared a national park.
