In Arabic درعة - تافيلالت, in Berber ⴷⴰⵔⵄⴰ-ⵜⴰⴼⵉⵍⴰⵍⵜ, the capital of the region is Errachidia. It is located inland, in the Atlas Mountains. The mountains form a watershed, the Draa River drains to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, and the Ziz River drains towards the inland and irrigates the Tafilalt oasis. The region has filmmaking industry in the Ouarzazate area. The economy is based on farming though, which unfortunately has been impacted by increasing desertification in recent years. One of the main tourist sites is the World Heritage Site Aït Benhaddou, whch is one of several fortified towns in the area. The M’Goun UNESCO Global Geopark is located at the northern border, as well as Parc National du Haut Atlas Oriental, both belong partly to Béni Mellal-Khénifra.
