Áncash is located in western Peru bordering the Pacific Ocean on the west. It has coastal plain but the rest is mountainous with two great longitudinal valleys. The Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra mountain ranges have a dozen mountains over 5000 m. They are separated by the Callejón de Huaylas, the valley of the Rio Santa. The Huascarán (6,768 m asl) is Peru's highest mountain. The Antamina copper and zinc mine, one of the largest in the world, located 52 km east of Huaraz, generated 43 % of the Ancash department’s gross domestic product in 2020.
