The Departamento de Cuzco (Department of Cuzco) is named after its capital Cusco, the historical capital of the Inca Empire. Its elevation is quite high, between 532 m and 4,801 m, it consits of high plains, like the plain of Anta which contains some of the best communal cultivated lands of the department. The elevation around 3,000 m als is used to cultivate mainly high altitude crops such as potatoes, tarwi (edible lupin), barley and quinoa.
