The Department of Pasco is located landlocked in central Peru, capital is Cerro de Pasco. It has two distinct landscapes, an Andean part in the west and an Amazonian part in the east. The western part is the Nudo de Pasco, an area of plateaus with mining activities, mostly copper. Typical are huge open casts with low grade ores. The capital is located here, at 4,338 m asl, and is thus considered to be the highest city in the world. The eastern part is called Selva Alta or yunga amazónica, and is high and middle jungle of the Pachitea River.
The main geological site of the department is the Bosque de Rocas or Huayllay Stone Forest in the Meseta of Bombón. But while the rock formations are often compared to Shilin Stone Forest, they are erosional forms of volcanic rocks and there is no connection to karst. That’s the reason why we did not list this site, nevertheless its well worth a visit.
