Carpaṭii Meridionali

Southern Carpatians

The Carpaṭii Meridionali (Southern Carpatians) are a section of the carpathian mountain range which runs est-west. Located northwest of Bucuresti, and southwest of Brasov, it is the central section of the mountain range. It is the part with the highest mountains and famous Dracula castles. There are several parts with limestone and show caves, there are mines and cave churches dug into the sandstone. We tried to use geological or at least geographical unit for Romania, the actual political states are not very helpful as they ignore geological units completely and the names are difficult for foreign tourists. So this area is actually a colletion of large parts of five counties which are more or less elongated and almost rectangular. These are Gorj, Valcea, Arges, Dambovita, and Prahova.
