Västra Götalands län (Western Götaland County) is at the western coast and borders Norway. The geology is similar to the rest of Sweden, the Fenno-Scandian Shield is composed of crystalline and metamorphic rocks. The area was covered by up to 3.5 km of glacier during the last ice age and so it was pressed into the upper mantle. After the ice is gone, the pressure release has caused a continuous and rather fast uplift, in geological terms at least. There are rare neotectonic caves, no karst, a little mining and some artificial structures.
