Estado Monagas is located on the coast in the northeast and was named after the general and president of Venezuela José Tadeo Monagas. But despite being very close to the coast, it is actually almost landlocked except for a small strip of swampy uninhabited coastline. In the northwest is a group of mountains with the massif of el Turimiquire and the massif of Caripe. The highest mountain of Monagas is Cerro Negro (2000 m asl). The rocks are mostly Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, predominantly sandstone, shale and limestone.
