Ninh Binh is located in the so-called Northern Delta, between the Red river and Ma river. The flat lowland is fertile and used for agriculture, especially rice fields. There are several areas with tower karst, the towers are riddled with caves. Currently, 1,500 caves are known in the region.
The Trang An–Tam Coc/Bich Dong landscape only a few kilometers west of the province capital Ninh Bình has one of the most scenic tropical karst morphologies in the world. It attracts up to 1 million visitors per year. The region is also famous for its cultural heritage in terms of archaeological importance and religious significance. Most famous is the area called Tam Cốc (Three Caves) where numerous caves are visited on three-hour boat tours.
