Kanton Luzern

The Kanton Luzern (canton of Lucerne) is located in the center of the German-speaking part. It is named after Lucerne city, which developed from a Benedictine monastery named Luciaria, which is probably derived from the patron saint of the monastery, St Leodegar. This part of Central Switzerland belongs to the northern Alps and the highest peak is the Brienzer Rothorn (2,350 m asl).
