Guaviare Department

Departamento de Guaviare

The sites listed here are located south of San José del Guaviare in a series of rock outcrops. The rocks are metamorphites of the Guiana Shield are some of the oldest in the world. The roads are partly in poor condition and there not very much signs. You will need a jeep and a driver, the best way to visit them is by booking your stay and a guide through a local agency.

San José del Guaviare is the capital of the department of Guaviare. But it exists only since 1960, it developed as a support nucleus for colonizing activities of the jungle region. In 1976, it received the status of municipality and has grown continually. The are is not very popular among tourists, so there are only a few guides and most do not speak english. If you plan to visit the area you should definitely book an english speaking guide in advance. Unlike the non-english speakers they advertise on the web. It's also possible to stay at one of the ecolodges (which seems to be a synonym for farmstay) and ask the landlord for help.
