Charles Brewer-Carías is a Venezuelan adventurer, explorer and naturalist. He is sometimes dubbed the "Humboldt of the twentieth century". His main research area is the Venezuelan Guayana region, which covers the two southern states Estado Bolívar and Estado Amazonas. In particular, he explored the tepuis, the spectacular table mountains of the region. He discovered the world’s largest known quartzite cave, which was anmed after him Cueva Charles Brewer. Around 27 species of animals and plants have been named in his honour, including the bromeliad genus Brewcaria.
Charles Brewer-Carías organized 200 expeditions to the area, 145 of them were to the tepuis. He discovered numerous tiankengs by plane, also several cave entrances. Later he explored and surveyed the caves. The Cueva del Fantasma (Cave of the Ghost) is so vast that two helicopters can comfortably fly into it and land next to a huge waterfall.
