The Estado Libre y Soberano de Guerrero (Free and Sovereign State of Guerrero) is located in southwest Mexico at the Pacific coast, which actually forms the southern border of the state. In colonial and post-Independence era the port of Acapulco was quite important for the economy, today the tourist destinations of Acapulco, Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa are the economic backbone. Guerrero translates warrior, the state was named after Vicente Guerrero, one of the most prominent leaders in the Mexican War of Independence and the second President of Mexico. The state is mountainous and rugged with flat areas limited to small mesas. The area around Taxco is famous for silver mining and silversmithing, due to the efforts of William Spratling since the 1950s. The state has numerous caves and several show caves.
