Monolithic Church

Rock Church

A monolithic church or rock-hewn church is a church made from a single block of stone. Because freestanding rocks of sufficient size are rare, such edifices are usually hewn into the ground or into the side of a hill or mountain. They can be of comparable architectural complexity to constructed buildings.

A special form of the cave church is the monolithic church. These are churches that are deliberately dug into the rock instead of being built into an existing cave. The pillars, the altar, holy water basins and other components are hewn from the rock. Sometimes even the outside is sculpted and decorated. The term actually says that all, mono lith actually translates literally single rock (μονο=mono=single, λίθος=lithos=rock).

The most famous Monolithic Churches are those of Lalibela in India, but actually such churches, despite being quite rare, are found all over the world. They are rather common in India, although in general, much less spectacular. Quite exceptional is that both European Monolithic Churches are in France.
