Hòa Bình or Hoà Bình are both transliteration of the Vietnamese name of this mountainous province in the north, southwest of Hanoi and the Red River delta. The capital is also named Hòa Bình. The province was created in 1886 with the name "Mường Province", because it was actually the region with a Mường majority. The Mường are an ethnic group native to northern Vietnam, it is the third largest of 53 minority groups in the country. More than 60 % of the people living in the province are Mường.
