Description

Murrawijinie Cave is typically said to be the only accessible cave on the Nullarbor Plain. We have listed three, but actually there is a difference, the other two have been restricted and require a permit, this one does not. Quite typical for the caves of this plain is the fact that the entrance is a collapse doline, actually it has three of them. The cave is nit really a painted cave, but there are some traces of the Indigenous Australians, hand stencils on the walls at one of the three entrances.

The cave requires massive preparation, and a visit has some danger, so we have a few basic hints. First, dry this only if you have a 4WD and GP so you actually reach the cave. Basic equipment is warme, comfortable clothes, helmet with headlamp, reserve lamp, gloves and good walking shoes. As far as we know gum boots are not required. But we would recommend clothes to change and a plastic bag for the dirty equipment nevertheless.

And finally a word about nature protection. The best thing for preservation is actually that it is so hard to reach. Legally it is protected by the Nullarbor Wilderness Protection Area. But the basic things are obvious and simple, leave nothing, take nothing, destroy nothing. This is especially for the aboriginal drawings and do not disturb the Hawks and Swallows which use entrance 3 and entrance 2 as nesting sites. And beware of snakes.
