Description

Carey’s Cave is located in the Wee Jasper Valley, close to Canberra. Three chambers are visited on the almost horizontal tour with only 30 steps at the entrance. Even people with some mobility problems can visit the cave, if they are able to walk a single staircase down and back up at the end. But it is mot wheelchair accessible. Rather exceptional is the changing temperature of the cave, which is between 15 °C and 17 °C. Also, quite spectacular are numerous calcite and aragonite crystals.

The cave offers weddings underground with superb acoustics. Several concerts are held in the cave over the year, which are named Crystal Clear Concerts. The also encourage any singers or musicians on a cave tour to check the acoustics. In 2024, they staged a performance of Aeschylus' Greek tragedy Agamemnon.

There are numerous limestone caves in the Wee Jasper valley, generally called the Wee Jasper Caves. The Dip Cave is located 4.5 km from Wee Jasper and has a 10 m deep entrance shaft, so climbing gear is required. Punchbowl-Signature Cave even has a 40 m deep entrance shaft. Dogleg Cave requires no climbing, but is a river cave and quite dangerous during heavy rain. In other words, there are numerous caves, but they are only for cavers, except for the single show cave. But the 400 Ma limestone offers other spectacular features, like a sort stone forrest with spectacular Rillenkarren.
