History

Description

朝陽千佛洞風景區 (Zhāoyáng qiān fú dòng fēngjǐng qū, Chaoyang Thousand Buddha Caves Scenic Area) is a semicircular vertical cliff with a ledge, which was used to build a cave monastery. Obviously, as the name suggests, it's a Buddhist monastery. There is a car park with ticket office at the foot of the hill. From here it's a 500 m 10 minutes hike with an elevation gain of 60 m to the cave monastery.

The rocks are conglomerates with mostly insoluble componenets like quartz and feldspar. The uplift is a result of an orogeny some 150 Ma ago. The rocks were weathered mostly by frost, so this is actually an erosional cave, created by the erosion of the weaker parts of the cliff.
