淮北国家矿山公园 (Huaibei National Mine Park) is a former coal mine, which has been transformed into a park. Enormous mining machinery is still there, which forms an open air museum. The Mining Museum has interactive exhibits which explain the coal mining history and the techniques. There is also a replica mine, which reconstructs the actual underground working deceptively real. And finally there is a Panoramic Observation Tower, which offers a 360° view of the park and surrounding countryside. The park has picnic sites, paved trails, and mining machinery.
The core of the Huaibei National Mining Park is Nanhu Wetland Park, which is located at the southern shore of Nan Hu, a waterfilled former open cast mine. Actuall ythere are more than half a dozen such artificial lakes in the center of Huaibei. But the Huaibei National Mine Park actually covers an area of 16 km² with four main scenic areas: Nanhu Subsidence Leisure and Entertainment Area, Donghu Mining Culture Sculpture Park, Xiangshan Geological Relics Area and Zhonghu Coal Mining Subsidence Ecological Restoration Area. Each subdivision offers some 40 mining cultural attractions of different kinds. One of the most obvious is the Xiangcheng Coal Mine Underground Tourism and Adventure. But there are also fossil sites and other mining related spots. This mine park is similar to a geopark with mining related geosites.
But the starting point of all exkursions is the 淮北矿山公园博物 (Huaibei Mine Park Museum) or 国家矿山博物馆 (National Mine Museum). The 3,600 m² of exhibition space include the Coal Generation Hall, Coal and Human Hall, Coal Development Technology Hall, Contemporary Coal Industry Hall, Coal Document Hall and the Replica Mine. The latter is located in the ground floor and reach with an elevator from the second floor. The elevator ride simulates how miners ride down the deep well through a combination of sound, light and movement. The underground tunnels of coal mines are reconstructed, and are equipped with a large number of underground coal mining objects. They even show the development from early coal mining faces to modern comprehensive mining faces with hydraulic single pillars. The main floor has a multimedia exhibition. The rock collection has almost a thousand different specimens of coal and surrounding rock.
