Description

The 中國煤炭博物館 (Coal Museum of China) or also 中国煤炭博物馆 (China National Coal Museum) is a huge museum about coal mining. The exhibitions include the formation of coal as well as the mining of coal. There is a replica of a coal mine which is visited on a guided tour. The museum is rather old and was created in the 1980s. So the exhibitions are not as interactive as more recent ones, also the whole explanatory texts are only in Mandarin. The tours are more expensive for foreign tourists, still the tours are only in Mandarin, which is a little annoying. The exhibitions on the other hand, although a little dated, are definitely worth a visit, as they show modern coal mining machinery.

This museum is, like anything in China, the result of a political decision. In 1982 the Fifth Session of the Fifth National People's Congress proposed the construction of the museum, and it was approved by the State Council. The museum was created by the former Ministry of Coal Industry who actually entrusted the construction of China Coal Museum to Shanxi Mining College. The museum was finally opened to the public in 1989 and is managed by the Shanxi Coal Mine Comprehensive Operation Corporation which was established in 1990.
