| 1964 | Tao Zhu, the First Secretary of the Central-South Bureau, visited the area and decided to develop the area. |
莲花洞 (Liánhuā dòng - Lotus Cave) was named after speleothems which resemble lotus flowers. As the name Lotus Cave is quite common, we added the location to the name which thus becomes 兴平莲花洞 (Xìng píng liánhuā dòng, Xingping Lotus Cave) The lotus flowers are often called stalagmites, but actually there is a large cave lake which is filled with water in spring and runs dry during summer. The lotuses are simply rimstone dams, which have rather unique shapes. The rimstone dams form circles, ovals and quite complicated winding forms. The 108 cave lotuses range in size between 30 cm and two meters. Many other beautiful speleothems can be seen in the cave. The accessible part is about 480 m long and has chambers of up to 40 m height and 25 m width.
This cave was published in the late 2000s, but there is no younger info available. We are not aware if it is still open to the public. For sure, it is not among the numerous "Scenic Areas" which are more or less theme parks. It was developed after Tao Zhu, the First Secretary of the Central-South Bureau, visited the area in 1964 and decided to develop it. He dispatched a working group for the renovation of the old city. One of the members, Professor Jin from the South China Institute of Technology was guided into the cave by local government leaders and residents. He named the hill Fudi Rock and the cave lake with the lotus formations Lotus Pond. Today the site is named 莲花岩景区 (Liánhuā yán jǐngqū, Lotus Rock Scenic Area).
