As often in China the name 雪玉洞 (Snow Jade Cave) is a rather baroque description of the cave. The limestone is very pure and as a result the speleothems in this cave are either snow white or transparent, almost like glas. They are growing very fast at about 33mm per 100 years. The cave is also called Fengdu Xueyu Cave, to distinguish it from other Xueyu Caves. It is located at the banks of the Yangtze River 170km downstream from Chongqing city.
The cave is the location of the first Chinese cave laboratory, installed by the Union of Speleology of the Geological Society of China.
The cave was discovered in 1997 Chinese New Year holiday by Wang Chengyun, a retired government official. He began to expore it with some friends. After two weeks they reported it to the local government and Professor Zhu Xuewen continued the exploration officially.
