The Yan’an Prefecture is the location of the Loess Plateau, huge layers of loes, deposited by winds from the Gobi Desert. The fine sand of the desert form a sand deposit, which is not hard rock. But this special sand has an important quality: cut walls are standing, where normal sand would trickle down. And the sand is still easy cut, it is possible to dug caves by using shovel and pickaxe. So it is rather easy to understand, why the people of this area used this technique to build their homes. Since thousands of years the Loess provides shelter for the inhabitants of Yan’an.
In the thirties the leaders of the socialist revolution used the caves as a hideout. This makes this area today a sort of "Holy Land" to today’s government.
Not far from the memorial hall for the revolution is a rather new hotel named 杨家岭石窑宾馆 (Yángjiālǐng shí yáo bīnguǎn, Yangjialing Stone Cave Guest House). It seems it has different variation of the english translation like Cave-house Hotel and Yan'an Heritage Cave Hotel. This hotel was built by digging 268 caves in seven layer into the hillside. The caves are similar to historic cave houses, but were created with modern machinery. The hotel was opened in 2002 and renovated in 2020.
