1908 | developed for climbing by German climbers. |
Tiské Stěny (Tiské Walls) is a phantastic landscape of steep sandstone rocks and narrow gorges inbetween. The wall of 70 m high rocks above the small town reaches 613 m asl and is about 1 km long. Popular since the 19th century the location was a tourist destination for almost 200 years. During the Cold War it was frequented by Czech Film teams, mostly for fairy tale movies, and since the end of the Cold War by international film crews. The most famous movie filmed in the typical sandstone rock was the Narnia movie.
The area has numerous such rock outcrops. and the erosional forms are quite typical. However, they belong to the unit which also forms the Elbsandsteingebirge in Germany. Here is actually the southwestern end of this formation.
Numerous trails allow access to this area, but walking is always involved. In general the villages with the parking lots and restaurants are located at the foot of the rocks. They are well prepared fo foreign tourists and sell high quality maps which show the popular walking trails. If you are adventurous, you can take a picture of the map at the parking lot and trust, that there will be sufficient marks along the trail. The Malé tiské stěny (Small Tiské Walls) is the main trail from Tiské connecting 19 rock formations. You can see Janus's Head, the Great Walls, the Forest Gate, the Pulpit and the Stone Table, Hercules, the Monster Cave, the Proviantura Slug, the Swedish Camp and the Castle Massif. The Velké tiské stěny (Large Tiské Walls) is a circuit which leads around the eastern plateau with numerous rock formations. We omit the names, be assured there are numerous creatively named formations, naming them was obviously a popular pastime in the 19th century.
The parking lot in Tiské at the Saint Anna church has a short ascent to the rocks along the cemetery. From the gap between the two formations both trails start. Here is also a small hut which sells souvenirs, soft drinks and food, an its the ticket office. There is a nominal fee, obviously only during the open hours of the ticket office. There is also a restaurant named Turistická chata at the road to Ostrov, which is on to other end of the Velké tiské stěny. So if you want to do only this circuit, or both, you can also start there.
