Right in the middle of the city Prague in Zizkov district (Prague 3) lies Parukářka park, and below the park lies a relict of the Cold War, a secret bunker of the communists built during the 1950s. The atomic bunker is named Bunkr Parukářka after the park or Bunkr Bezovka was abandoned after the Cold War. The bunker has several entrance, the visitors use the one located right below the popular pub Hospůdka Parukářka.
The abandoned bunker is one of the largest in Prague, and also located at a popular place. It was transformed into an underground Cold War museum showing numerous remains from this era, like gas masks, measuring equipment, dozimeters, chemical analyzers, uniforms, and army gear. Photographs, books, and newspapers give an idea how the people thought at that time. Authentic equipmnet from the bunker includes helmets, bags, boxes, flags, pins and furniture like beds and . The technical machine rooms with the original machines for electricity, clean water, clean air and heatingare also shown. And you will get a glimpse of the vast tunnel system with the abandoned looking rooms and connection tunnels, where the people would have stayed.
This is the only bunker which is open to the public. It was actually a bunker intended as a shelter for the general population. Nearby in Parukářka hill is another civilian bunker. The main bunker in Prague was the subway system, the stations which were built in the 1970s and 1980s can be transformed into underground shelters. However, the bunker is much bigger that the visible part, the tunnels used by the subway are only 25 % of the whole bunker. The Presidential Shelter lies 60 m below the Prague Castle inside the rock and its construction was ordered by president Zápotocký. And there is a emergency shelter of the Czech Radiocommunication Service.
There are actually two ways to visit the bunker. One is to take one of the bunker tours. However, the daily tours were discontinued and there are now only a few dates with tour, additionally it’s possible to join a group, but participation requires reservation by email or phone. The easier way to see the bunker is by taking the Prague Communism and Nuclear Bunker Tour. This tour takes place daily, but online booking is mandatory.
