| 1250 | Castle built. |
| 26-DEC-2023 | Mining labyrinth opened. |
The Mining Labyrinth in Scharfenstein Family Castle is an exhibition about historical mining in the Ore Mountains. The exhibition is located in the castle cellars and displays tools, clothing, miner's lamps and the miners' workplace. Techniques such as fire setting are explained, and there is a mineral collection with a section for fluorescent minerals. The exhibition is designed for children and has a strong interactive aspect. The mining labyrinth is modelled on a mining tunnel. It is divided into 11 thematic areas covering the history of mining in the Ore Mountains from its beginnings to its end.
On Sundays and during school holidays, the exhibition offers gemstone mining for children. You have to register, but the admission price is included in the ticket for the castle museum.
Scharfenstein Castle stands on a mountain spur high above the Zschopau Valley. It was built in 1250 during the settlement of the Ore Mountains, at the time of the first silver discovery.
