As the name says, this is a mountain of salt. A salt diapir which was formed by salt flowing slowly upwards and forming a mushroom-like structure reached the surface. It was quarried and later mined.
Today a 80 m long tunnel in the salt is open for the public. It shows phantastic crystallizations of salt. Part of the tour are also engines and other mining equipment which were used to mine the salt. In the shop, sculptures of salt are sold, which are made by local artisans.
