Abadía del Sacromonte (Sacromonte Abbey) has a cave church named Santas Cuevas (Holy Caves). The whole quarter is called Sacromonte, holy hill, after these caves. They were, according to Christian tradition the place where martyrs were killed. Today they are part of the church, which was built on top. The Christian martyrs are St. Cecilius, the first Archbishop of Granada, and his followers, St. Hiscius and St. Patricius.

The monastery is very rich in art, sculpture and architecture. While the churches are open all year for free, the visit of the art in the monastery requires a guided tour which is not free. However, the caves are part of the church and can be visited freely. For the guided tour it is necessary to pre-book online or by phone. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the visit to validate the ticket at the ticket office. The tour will always start on time.

There are actually two different tours of the abbey. In the General Tour the Abbey’s origins are explained and only the most essential parts of the monument are visited. In the Premium Tour or Art Tour rooms that have been opened to the public very recently are shown, and a significant part of the monument’s artistic heritage. Works of a great historical and artistic value cn be seen. The tours are offered in Spanish and English, but there are no English rt Tours. Its also possible to book a private guide. Together with the Cathedral and the Alhambra, the Abadía del Sacromonte is one of the most emblematic monuments of the Capital. It is the cradle of Christianity in Granada.
