History

Description

The small village Setenil de las Bodegas is located along the Guadalporcún river, which eroded a narrow river gorge. The housed were built underneath massive rock overhangs formed by the river. Building houses was rather simple, as only a front wall was needed, no other walls or roof. And the place was cool during summer and rather warm during winter. If you want to see the inside of such a cave house, just visit one of the shops or the small tapas bars. Local delicacies are chorizo sausages, olive oil, honey, jam and Andalusian wine.

The town is separated into Cuevas del Sol (Sun Caves) and Cuevas de la Sombra (Shadow Caves). The first are bright by the sunlight reflected from the white cliff above, the others are always in the shadow. The cave houses are also known under the name abrigos bajo las rocas, shelters under the rock. From town starts an impressive trail named Ruta de los Bandoleros along the Escarpe de Río Trejo.
