History

23-NOV-1984 private nature reserve established by the decision of the Central Finland Provincial Government.

Description

Hitonhauta (Devil’s Tomb) is the largest gorge in Middle-Finland, 30 m to 40 m wide and up to 25 m deep. It contains a beautiful small pond, a waterfall and many caves. It was named after a legend that a spirit called Hitto, who was associated with the devil, lived in the area. Others say his name was Hitto Menninkää, and his petrified face can be found on the rock wall of the gorge.

The forest with Hitonmäki, Piilolamminkallio, and Huippuvuori hills is not crossed by any road. It is a forest full of rock formations and with numerous walking trails. Actually, it is possible to access the area from all sides, but all roads end, and it is necessary to hike.
